UPDATE: Smith will exit Greeneville following tiebreaker vote

Greeneville Town Manager Todd Smith was ordered to submit his resignation following a tiebreaking vote by Mayor Cal Doty.
Doty reiterated his call for Smith’s exit that was spelled out in a letter that was sent out late last week. Doty said Smith had received unflattering marks in his personnel file in the past and that the town needs a transitional period with new ideas and oversight from that office.
Smith addressed the council prior to the vote, suggesting the call for his resignation was due to Doty’s concern over his lunchtime guests who includes former town leaders. Smith noted that the real reason behind the move was to make a possible power play that would move him into the role of Town Manager.
Doty said Smith’s resignation would be effective Friday. Smith has worked in conjunction with the council since he was hired in December of 2011.
