Attorney General says college womens’ swim team punished by rejecting postpubescent male teammate

The consequence of allowing a biological male to join the Roanoke College women’s swim team is a list of state and federal violations cited by the Virginia Attorney General’s Office.
It was 2023 when college officials informed team members that a male taking hormone therapy to meet NCAA guidelines would be in their program—a decision rejected by teammates who complained multiple times to the Roanoke College Athletic Director Curtis Campbell and School President Frank Shushok Jr.

The report said the school retaliated against the women’s team by denying their request for a study-abroad program. AG Jason Miyares said Roanoke College violated a state law by denying privileges to women teammates that were awarded to the male swimmer.

A Roanoke College statement said the school categorically denies the allegations in the Attorney General’s report and is cooperating with requests from Miyares’ office.
