One person receives medical care after ammonia leak at US Nitrogen
Executives at US Nitrogen have shut down their nitric acid plant after emergency officials informed them of ammonia smells in nearby neighborhoods on Tuesday.
A report from the company said the smell was detected in the area of Pottertown Road in Midway and ammonia was being expelled by the acid plant operations. Those results showed no harmful levels in the nearby community.
One person at an adjacent business was treated at the location for slight nausea and dizziness by local emergency crews and then released from their care, the statement said.
There were no other injuries reported, property damage, or impact to the environment. The nitric acid plant is currently shut down and is safe and secure. The situation is controlled, and there is no current risk to employees or the surrounding community. There is no ongoing release of ammonia, said the statement posted on Tuesday.
“U.S. Nitrogen has been in direct communication with local emergency management officials, regulatory agencies, and neighboring facilities and will continue to cooperate with regulatory agencies as part of standard follow-up procedures. The company will provide additional information as appropriate.”
