New legislation in TN requires proof of insurance to register vehicle
New Legislation requiring Tennessee drivers to show proof of insurance when registering a vehicle passed in the recently concluded Tennessee General Assembly. The legislation feeds off the Tennessee Financial Responsibility Law, originally passed in 1977, that holds drivers financially responsible for motor vehicle accidents. The bill will change fines for coverage failure from $25 to $500 for the first notice, $100 to $1,000 for the second, and $1,500 for any notices after that. When the law goes into effect, to register your vehicle, you have to have your driver’s license and proof of residence, and now you’ll have to show insurance verification to register your vehicle.
