Shady business deals benefitting former Newland, North Carolina executives revealed in state audit report
In a town just eight miles outside of Unicoi County, Tennessee, former government leaders are accused of making shady business deals that has placed Newland, North Carolina under the microscope of the State Auditor’s Office.
Investigators said former Administrator Bill Bailey made a deal with an unlicensed contractor for maintenance and debris removal at a cost over half-a-million dollars.
The former mayor Derek Roberts pocketed more than $36,000 after submitting a bid for the town’s mowing contract using his own company although records indicate Roberts dissolved the business 20 years ago.
More than $15,000 in a wire transfer made by staff to a cyber criminal has never been recovered, the report said.
