Tazewell County, Virginia man convicted on murder charge in connection to 2023 shooting

A Tazewell County, Virginia man faces life in prison without parole after a jury in Mercer County, West Virginia convicted him on a murder charge.

John Aaron Norton of Pounding Mill, had barricaded himself in a home on Maple Acres Road in Princeton in February of 2023 and shot at police officers multiple times. Investigators said a stray bullet shot by Norton entered a neighboring home through a window and struck Jessica Smith, 40, in the chest while she tried to evacuate her home along with her family. Norton will be sentenced later.
