Washington County VA approves sales tax increase resolution for school projects to voters for approval

The Washington County, Virginia Board of Supervisors voted 5-2 Tuesday to approve a resolution putting a proposed one-percent sales tax increase for school projects before voters. Many residents voiced opposition to the possible consolidation of Holston High School and Patrick Henry High School, a project connected to the proposed tax increase. Residents also want the county to provide more details about which schools could close and how consolidation plans would move forward before voting to approve a tax increase. If approved by voters, the additional sales tax would help fund school construction and major renovation projects across the county. The measure is expected to appear on the ballot in April, 2027.
