August 6 election recap: Races for county mayor primaries comes down to the wire

Two races for mayor in Northeast Tennessee primaries came down to the final count with incumbents scoring narrow wins.

Carter County’s Patty Woodby was the unofficial winner defeating Chris Little by 233 votes while in Washington County, Joe Grandy defeated James Reeves in their third campaign meeting since 2018.

Incumbents were also defeated in select races Thursday night with Tennessee House member John Crawford losing to challenger Jessica Means for the GOP ballot spot with 61 percent. In Washington County, months of controversy resulted in a loss for District 1 school board member Keith Ervin with newcomer Mary Grace Wooten earning a seat alongside present members Annette Buchanan and Vince Walters.

Other winners on Thursday included Senator Rusty Crowe, who retains the primary spot he won back in 1991; Stephanie Sherwood was victorious in the race for Johnson City Juvenile Court Judge while Mark Stapleton won his run for Greene County Circuit Court judge; and, in Johnson County, current Sheriff Clifton Worley was defeated by his Chief Deputy Shawn Bit Brown.
