Call goes out for volunteer workers for clean-up in Dante

With flood waters receding in Dante, Virginia, clean-up began in earnest with a call going out from local elected officials to bring tools and manpower to the tip end of Russell County.
Delegate Israel O’Quinn said local officials evaluated several locations where highways and homes will have to be cleared and that will require machinery and strong hands. Virginia Senator Todd Pillion said meals will be needed to help families that were among the three dozen people rescued by emergency and swift water teams.
The lawmakers said the Dante Community Center is the epicenter of operations and distributing items to families. O’Quinn said the donations needed the most are buckets, cleaning supplies and shovels.
A preliminary list of roadways that received significant damage and are closed for safety precautions are Saw Mill Hollow, Route 627, Straight Hollow, Route 608 and portions of Route 63 which is the main route for most traffic in Dante. The donation center for the community will open each day at 8:30.
