Carter County Commissioners discuss proposed quarry

Carter County Commissioners met for the first time since concerns about construction of a rock quarry in the Dennis Cove community arose. It’s a project that could have severe effects on nearby residents, yet there has been minimal information shared. Residents attended the meeting to express concerns about lower property values, taking away the mountain’s beauty and the water quality. Some in attendance also had concerns about effects on local business’ and views along the Appalachian Trail. Commissioner Todd Smith said the quarry could hurt citizens’ trust of the commission. Some worry the quarry has received favorable bias because owner Gary Bailey serves on the planning commission. Smith proposed Bailey be removed from the planning commission with that motion being approved. Bailey’s removal will receive a vote at the next meeting. In order for removal, two-thirds of the commission need to vote yes.
