Carter County re-establishes honor guard
Carter County has not had an active honor guard in four years, but now there is a re-establishment of the honor guard made up of members of the American Legion Post 49 and VFW Post 2166, both of Elizabethton. The guard is still looking for veterans to volunteer to help. $10,000 dollars of initial funding is coming from the Carter County Sheriff’s Office’s reserve fund. The money will go toward uniforms, supplies, gas, and outreach to local funeral homes to explain the process. Carter County Mayor Patty Woodby says her plan is to reinstate $10,000 annually back into the county budget to fund the honor guard. That must be approved by the budget committee first, and then the whole commission. The matter is set to go before the budget committee on March 9.
