Final vote on BWXT rezoning request scheduled for Monday

The final vote on a controversial rezoning for BWXT’s Jonesborough site is set for Monday. BWXT is requesting to rezone land next to its Jonesborough location from agriculture to industrial to support expansion to create uranium based metal for defense purposes. Some residents have organized in opposition concerned about potential radiation contamination. The full Washington County Commission will take up the issue after the planning commission recommended rejecting the rezoning. Each side will have one hour to speak during a public hearing ahead of the vote. The meeting is set for 6 p.m., Monday night at the George Jaynes Justice Center.
