Four Southwest Virginia localities listed on ‘sanctuary jurisdictions’ by Homeland Security

US Congressman Morgan Griffith says it was surprising to see a number of localities within the 9th Congressional District on a list of more than 500 sanctuary jurisdictions issued by Homeland Security. In a released statement, Griffith said he notified federal government liaisons about those towns and counties that, under Homeland Security guidelines, defines those areas as out of compliance with President Trump’s agenda of deporting millions of illegal immigrants.
The town of Tazewell, Abingdon and Duffield were listed along with Tazewell County as areas that need to review and revise policies pertaining to harboring dangerous illegal aliens.
Griffith concluded that paperwork anomalies related to federal detainers, particularly at regional jails could provide an answer. The congressman also said he intends to have answers in the coming days.
Abingdon police officials announced Friday after discussions with federal authorities, the town’s name will be taken off the list.
