Holston Army officials report accidental discharge into Holston on July 6

The Holston Army Ammunition Plant in Kingsport has informed Tennessee water regulators of an accidental discharge into the Holston River earlier this month.
The incident occurred on July 6 and according to a letter sent by Holston Army to the Department of Environment and Conservation it was caused by a heat activation device located on a floor adjacent to where work was being performed.
The letter also informed the agency that a preliminary review showed possible “residual energetic material contamination” of the waterway. Officials with the First Utility District were contacted by Holston Army after the discharge and water intake from the Holston was suspended for a number of hours.
