Positive news posted about Appalachian State student hit by vehicle on 421

A social media message posted Wednesday said an Appalachian State student critically injured after being hit by a vehicle on Old Highway 421 is now breathing on her own.
The positive news about Mallory P. Mayor, 20, comes days after she was struck while walking to campus following a music festival and trying to cross the highway. The family reported Mallory received emergency brain surgery and underwent a procedure on her leg after she arrived at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital.
Mallory suffered a fractured skull and brain bleed in the incident. The North Carolina Highway Patrol said the driver who hit Mallory was not impaired and criminal charges will not be filed.
A GoFundMe account established for Mallory reached the $48,000 mark on Wednesday.
