Transgender sports ban bill similar to Tennessee legislation signed by Mississippi governor
Governor Tate Reeves in neighboring Mississippi has signed a bill very similar to one under review in Tennessee that would ban transgender athletes from participating in sports.
Governor Bill Lee said last month that girls’ sports in middle and high school would be destroyed if a person was allowed to play under their chosen identity instead of the gender classified on their birth certificate.
The Tennessee bill passed the Senate this month and is likely to have overwhelming support in the GOP-controlled House. Lawmakers in Nashville are also considering a bill that would ban transgender students from using designated restrooms and locker rooms.
