US Marshals Service warning of scam in SWVA
The United States Marshals Service is warning people in Southwest Virginia about a phone scam that involves people impersonating Deputy U.S. Marshals and demanding victims make payments related to fake jury duty violations, contempt of court charges or federal summonses. The scammers will use fake telephone numbers, fake badge numbers, and even impersonate actual US Marshals by title and name. The USMS will never call people to demand payment, ask for money to avoid arrest, ask for a person’s card information or send fines, warrants or summonses by email. Anyone who is threatened by someone claiming to be with the USMS demanding payment should be presumed to be a scammer. The USMS is working with the FBI regarding the scam, anyone believing they may be a victim of the scam should report it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
