Wife that requested money online for ailing husband now charged with murder
In November, Amanda Hawkins was posting updates to social media about her husband using pictures of him in a coma, in a hospital bed and asking for donations to help with his medical bills.
The 45-year-old Hawkins is now charged with his murder, according to Russell County Sheriff Bill Watson, after allegedly poisoning the man. Her other charges include distribution of schedule II drugs and money laundering.
Hawkins is being held without bond.
The messages Hawkins placed online were on GoFundMe.com. In the post, Hawkins says “…My Husband is in really bad shape. Has brain damage and swelling on his brain.” It also said that the donations would be used for medical bills and purchases for necessities.
General District Court records out of Russell County show Hawkins was already scheduled for hearings in August after her arrest in March for DUI and possession of Schedule III drugs.
