ASP prepares for new center opening
ASP, The Appalachia Service Project has been headquartered in the area for decades and is finally preparing to open its new Appalachian Highlands Volunteer and Training Center in Washington County. The facility has space for training, teaching, meeting rooms, and a large gathering space. The facility also can serve as a lodging area for volunteers who come into town. Around 130 people can be hosted there on a regular basis, but it is also open to the community, teaching volunteers and staff construction skills and major repairs and replacement. President and CEO of ASP, Melisa Winburn, said this project has been almost a decade in the making. A ribbon cutting will be held for the facility on June 5, and volunteers will start to use the center in the following weeks.
