Court documents reveal driving infractions for man accused of fatal Milligan cycling accident

Court documents show a nearly 30-year history complete with driving violations for John Benfield, the man accused of crashing into a Milligan University cycling team in Carter County on August 19. The court records from Lee County, Florida show Benfield was charged with a DUI in July of 1990. He was charged with driving a vehicle with a suspended license in September later that year. Avery County, North Carolina court documents say that Benfield was charged with a DWI by the Banner Elk Police Department and given a breathalyzer test, which read 0.14. Benfield pled guilty and served 60 days and 24 hours of community service. Benfield has also been charged with many traffic violations across multiple North Carolina counties, including a hit-and-run with property damage. Depending on the results of Benfield’s toxicology report could affect any potential sentence he may receive. Benfield has posted bond and has been released from custody with certain conditions placed on him after his release The National Transportation Safety Board announced Monday they were launching an investigation into the August 19 crash.
