Standoff ends at Avery County, North Carolina campground

A school in neighboring Avery County, North Carolina was placed on lockdown after a standoff situation escalated at a Newland campground.

A Sheriff’s Office report said deputies were sent to Big Mike’s Campground after reports of a suicidal and armed man on the grounds. Negotiations went on for hours and then the man became more aggressive. The statement said the lockdown was a precaution and there was no threat beyond the campground.

The suspect was arrested and no injuries were reported.
