VSP & KSP: Letcher County stabbing suspects exchanges gunfire with Wise County law enforcement

Town and county officers were forced to draw their weapons and return fire when they found a stabbing suspect out of Kentucky along US Route 23 near Norton.

A State Police statement said Stuart Reynolds, 72, fired at Wise County deputies and town of Wise officers upon arriving at his location. Agents said Reynolds, after his shots struck the patrol cruisers of the policemen, eventually surrendered and was taken into custody.

In Virginia, Reynolds faces three counts of attempted aggravated murder of a law enforcement officer and one count of malicious wounding. One of the deputies was injured when he was hit from falling glass from a door window hit by a shot.

A Kentucky State Police report said Reynolds had fled to Virginia after he allegedly stabbed a female victim in the chest in Letcher County. Reynolds is scheduled for a court hearing in Wise County Tuesday morning.
